Founded in 1841, Dallas is the ninth largest city of the United States and the seat of the Dallas County of the state of Texas. The city is also home to several public libraries, of which the best known is the Dallas Public Library. Established in 1901, the Dallas Public Library was the brainchild of Mrs. Henry (May Dickson) Exall, the president of the Dallas Federation of Women's Clubs. With her untiring efforts, Mrs Exall managed to raise US$11,000 from gifts from public school teachers, local businessmen, and A. H. Belo of The Dallas Morning News. This, coupled with a US$50,000 grant from philanthropist and steel giant Andrew Carnegie helped to construct the first library building on Harwood and Commerce streets with a head librarian, three assistants, and 9,852 volumes. Today,the Dallas Public Library has 27 branch locations within the city with over 2.5 million volumes, including books, magazines, videos, and cassettes. The Dallas Public Library currently attracts about 2.8 million visitors per year and has about 540,000 members.
